Fall 2004 at Hands On Bookbinding:
Dine, Baris, Connor and Thiewes.
Usually one book edition dominates the pre-holiday push, but more than five editions were in the works including a 37 book and box edition for Jim Dine’s book Oceans; a fifty-four book edition for Bob Baris’ Press on Scroll Road entitled Some Rules of the Game; and exposed sewn bindings of stunning nature photographs by Washington DC photographer Will Connor, among others. When time allowed, one of a kind boxes were made to house and to display El Paso jeweler Rachelle Thiewes’ unique bracelets and earrings.

Jim Dine OCEANS was letterpress printed and published by the Tandem Press at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Jigs were used to score hinges to adhere the Dine text sheets together and form french fold sections (so no page is printed back to back). Below the pages are tipped or glued together before they are sewn.

Final inspection of the Jim Dine book and box edition.
Bob Baris.
Press on Scroll Road edition: Some Rules of the Game was hand sewn and bound in a green Japanese bookcloth with endpapers of Twinrocker handmade paper.
Will Connor.
Bound in a non-adhesive, exposed sewn binding with spines of handmade Iowa paper, at least 18 of these large format books have been bound at the studio.
Rachelle Thiewes.
Rachelle’s boxes may look simple, but they can be very complex. The picture below shows the need for such a box. The platinum gold disks risk being damaged without the suspension the box offers.
