2007 SPRING & SUMMER WORKSHOPS
UPDATE: April, 2007: Summer Classes may be postponed due to pending studio move June 1st.
BOOKBINDING BASICS,
The Flatback & Rounded Casebinding
March 3 & 4 (10:00 to 4:00) Limited to 7 students.
Workshop Fee (includes all materials): $160.
This introductory workshop prepares students for a variety of binding techniques. The case binding is the most commonly used and versatile bookbinding structure used today. It can be the basis for more refined styles, whether incorporating leather or cloth, or for repairing old books. Simple and sound methods will be taught through the construction of two flatback books and one rounded book in cloth and decorative papers, while learning about cutting, measuring and covering techniques. Materials included.
This class is a prerequisite for more advanced classes at the Hands On Bookbinding studio.
CASE BINDING REFINED,
1/4 & 1/2 Binding with Leather
April 14 & 15 (10:00 to 4:00) Limited to 7 students.
Workshop Fee (includes leather, materials) $195.
This two day workshop concentrates on further refinements of the casebinding and introduces the student to working with leather. The 1/4 Leather rounded case will have leather on the spine and a decorative paper on boards. The 1/2 Leather case adds leather to four corners. An excellent course preparing students for further experience with leather and fine binding technique. Includes leather and materials, but students may wish to bring their own decorative papers.
Prerequisites: Hands On Bookbinding’s Bookbinding Basics class.
NEW!! this season/ MILLIMETER STYLE BINDING,
May 19 & 20 (10:00 to 4:00) Limited to 7 students.
Workshop Fee (includes leather, materials): $180.
A departure from case binding, this workshop introduces ìin-boardsî binding where the boards are attached to the text before covering. A variation of the European millimeter binding, this elegant structure features thin boards with a minimal amount of leather applied to the spine and literally millimeters to board edges, bringing attention to the decorative paper on the boards. Includes leather and materials, but students may wish to bring their own decorative papers.
Prerequisites: Hands On Bookbinding’s Bookbinding Basics and Casebinding Refined classes.
Postponed: The first two workshops, BOOKBINDING BASICS & CASE BINDING REFINED, will be repeated this summer with the BASICS scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 14 & 15 and REFINED for August 28 & 29.
A BOXMAKING workshop is tentatively scheduled for August 11 and 12.
